Smart Signs calls for placing a simple tactile icon in a predictable location on room signs, elevator button panels, evacuation maps and other signs. Visitors and residents can tap their smartphone on the icon to access the same information presented on the sign in visual-only format.

Smart Signs will be installed and tested in several indoor environments, including at VIA Center in Buffalo, and at Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California.

According to the developers at University at Buffalo, “Smart Signs provide multisensory information for destination confirmation for all building users, enhanced knowledge of building features and operations, and improved facility management.”
