Smithsonian American History Museum Tactile Map Kiosks

Now open. These maps provide universal access to wayfinding and orientation information for a large museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Each map shows all three floorplans and a numbered index that lists permanent and temporary exhibits. Users hear auditory feedback when they touch any map element with one finger for one second.

  • 27 inch diagonal touch screen.

  • Android app adds interactivity.

  • Tactile skin adds raised outlines and textures.

  • Press on any room with one finger to hear its name.

  • Press again on the same room to hear a description of exhibits.

  • Press again for walking directions from the map to any destination in the musuem.

  • Rising pitch sonification allows visually impaired visitors to locate items in the index list.
