Three Islands Crossing State Park Audio-Tactile Map
Located inside the Oregon Trail History and Education Center, this exhibit helps to interpret the history of Three Islands Crossing in central Idaho. At this location, up until 1869, settlers traveling west along the Oregon Trail had to ford the Snake River with their covered wagons, using two of the islands as places of refuge from the torrent along the route.
Visitors can explore our map’s raised lines, textures and braille labels that overlay an aerial photograph of Three Islands Crossing State Park. The map shows the route that settlers took to attempt the dangerous crossing. They can press push buttons at key locatations along the trail, to activate audio recordings of actors reading actual diary entries of people who made this arduous, dangerous journey. This exhibit is informative and fun, and includes access features. Click here for more information about the history of this site.
