Smithsonian American History Museum Tactile Map Kiosks
Now open. These maps provide universal access to wayfinding and orientation information for a large museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Each map shows all three floorplans and a numbered index that lists permanent and temporary exhibits. Users hear auditory feedback when they touch any map element with one finger for one second.

Android app adds interactivity.
Tactile skin adds raised outlines and textures.
Press on any room with one finger to hear its name.
Press again on the same room to hear a description of exhibits.
Press again for walking directions from the map to any destination in the musuem.
Rising pitch sonification allows visually impaired visitors to locate items in the index list.
