APS Crosswalk Diagrams

As part of its Vision Zero program aimed at reducing pedestrian injuries and deaths, New York CIty asked Touch Graphics to develop signs to mount above Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) to illustrate traffic configurations. These handy little signs show the direction of traffic flow, number of lanes of traffic, and the presence of bike lanes, bus stops, and refuge islands. In a research study commissioned by NYC Department of Transportation and carried out by Dr. Elena Prassas of NYU Tech, tactile crosswalk diagrams mounted on eight APS at West 23 Street and Seventh Avenue proved to be helpful to visually impaired subjects.
