NYC Transit Subway Signs
The world’s largest subway system wants to make their stations more accessible for disabled riders. Recently, NYC Transit, the agency that runs the subways, asked Touch Graphics to develop tactile graphic strip maps to test out in a few stations, so see if riders find them useful. These signs show the entire route of the train, with each stop indicated as a large dot along a tactile line, and labeled in braille. You Are Here is clearly marked, allowing braille readers to determine the names of each station between their current location and their destination. If these signs prove sufficiently durable, they may be rolled out more broadly.
Update for 2023: NYC Transit has commissioned four stations along the 1 Train route in Manhattan as test sites for tactile strip maps.
